Jil Sander Fall
2011
2011
MILAN–"Raf Simon‘s cited 1950s couture, Diane Arbus’ tunic dresses, furniture designer Jacques Adnet, and Louise Dahl-Wolfe–one of my favorite fashion photographers–as inspiration for his Fall 2011 Jil Sander collection."*
The 1950's couture is evidently shown but to me, the 1920's era seemed to be in mind when the collection was made. The 1920's jazzy fashion style and the Flappers fashion must have been big inspirations for Raf Simons. From the gloves extending to the elbows, to the close nit hair styling and cuts of the clothes, everything seems to relate to the 1920's, and yes, the 1950's. Before I saw the collection, I was worried that it would only consist of only colorful maxi skirts and tunic dresses, but I was surprised to see the bright sweaters, dark pants and over sized tops. The combination of the large tops and ski sweaters with the straight legged black pants and the black wedges create a dramatic feel that expresses the elegance, class and popular past fashion movements.
To me–from the robin egg blue eyeliner to the oversize, molded shirt dresses to the tight fit, ski pants strapped into wedge booties is a throwback to the 1950's. Jil Sander 2011 Fall Collection would fit in perfectly in the 1950's fashion world and each outfit seems to scream, Vogue 1950. The hair styling, done by Guido Palau, and the makeup is very sculptural and artistic, except for the hair under the cap. The makeup, done by Peter Phillips, exposes controlled elegance and
modernization.

The feeling of conservation and reservedness was portrayed in the 1950's- in music, art and fashion. The couture seems to incorporate the 1950's fashion with the attitude of the Roaring 20's Flapper.
The Collection is successful in showing forward thinking through historical references in art, fashion and the pop culture feel of the 1920's and 1950's.
Needless to say, I like it. A lot.
